The CPA Exams are administered by AICPA, the world & largest accounting body. AICPA offers membership to all aspirants who successfully clear all 4 CPA exams. CPA license, however, is issued by the 55 state boards of accountancy of the US that are part of NASBA. Each state board has different eligibility criteria that the aspirant needs to meet to take the US CPA exams.

  • Master Degree in any of the streams of Commerce, Accounting or Finance
  • An aspirant needs 120 credits to take the US CPA exams and 150 credits to get his CPA license
  • It’s considered that one year of University education in India is equal to 30 credits of US education

Conquering the 4-Part CPA Exam

CPA Exam timeframe: Pass all four parts within 18 months from 1st pass

Yes, you can pursue a CPA after completing your BCom degree. This is one of the minimum requirements for CPA eligibility.

  • A CPA Exam requires 120 credits or a B.Com degree from a recognised university.
  • US CPA License: Requires 150 credits, can be fulfilled with B.Com + M.Com/MBA or B.Com + CA/CS/CWA

It is subjective. The difficulty of the CPA exam versus the CA exam depends on individual factors. Some may find CPA harder due to U.S. accounting regulations, while others may find CA exams challenging due to depth and complexity. Both require dedication and preparation to pass.

It is allowed to retake the exam for any failed section without any limit on the number of attempts. After clearing a section, you are required to pass the remaining sections within 18 months.

The CPA Exam consists of four papers - three four-hour Core papers and one four-hour Discipline paper of your choice.

The Core papers include:

  • Auditing and Attestation (AUD)
  • Financial Accounting and Reporting (FAR)
  • Taxation and Regulation (REG)

On the other hand, the Discipline paper consist of:

  • Business Analysis and Reporting (BAR)
  • Information Systems and Control (ISC)
  • Tax Compliance and Planning (TCP)

You have to choose one of the above discipline papers.

CPA eligibility for Indian students is:

  • The student must have completed a bachelor's degree in commerce and accounting with a minimum of 60% marks.
  • Additionally, those with CA, CMA, and CS degrees are also eligible to appear for the CPA exam.
  • However, Indian students must complete additional coursework in accounting and related subjects to meet the requirements. These courses typically cover financial accounting, auditing, taxation, business law, and management accounting. By gaining knowledge in these areas, students can strengthen the foundation required for the CPA designation.
