It is the backbone of investing, helping people understand what a share might be worth and what decisions to make. Analysts examine the statements issued by these companies and notice how the industry moves and shifts. This helps estimate share value and support investment choices. Knowing share value is key for anyone making investment decisions.

Equity research analysts build models, forecast earnings, and use valuation methods such as discounted cash flow (DCF) and relative valuation to set target prices. The main types of Equity research are buy‑side, sell‑side, and independent. Equity research reports cover the investment thesis, the forecasts, the valuation, the risks, and the disclosures. In India, people who want a career in Equity research must have accounting, analytical, and writing skills.

Equity research is the study of listed companies to work out what their shares are worth. Analysts read financial statements, follow industries, build forecasts and publish a view- usually buy, hold or sell- with a target price. Investors, fund managers and brokerages use that view to decide what to do with a stock.

People ask me what equity research is in practice, and my honest answer is that it’s an argument about value. Someone writes down why a company should be worth more or less than its price, and the market gets to prove them right or wrong. Calling a report a prediction gives it too much credit. It also gives you too little power over it.

This guide does two jobs. One is explaining equity research as a way of thinking about stocks. The other is explaining equity research as a career in India, which can be easily covered in a financial analysis prodegree. You will learn how to read a report without letting the rating influence you. You will understand what the work includes, what the regulator wants, and what people really make. The meaning of equity research is in the part that takes less than a minute. Once an investment report stops being gospel, you can do something with it. Agree, disagree, ask for better evidence in the equity research report. I prefer that to blind trust or blanket cynicism, and I suspect you will too.

Compare Various Equity Research Types

Select each tab to see how sell-side, buy-side and independent equity research work. class="wp-block-heading">What Is Equity Research? The Meaning in Simple Words

Equity research means analysing a listed company, its industry and its financial statements to decide what the share should be worth. What comes out is usually a report with a call (buy, hold or sell) and a target price, which is the level the analyst expects the share to reach in about twelve months. That covers the equity research meaning. The bit that took me longest to appreciate is that prices respond to surprise rather than to quality. A good company can fall on a good result.

Say a company grows profit 12% and the share falls 6%. Hypothetical, but you've probably watched the real version happen. The market wanted 18.

So the analyst is working out what the price already assumes and whether the future will look any different. Whether the business is good matters less than that.

Portfolio fund management requires these reports to size positions, brokerages hand them to clients, and companies read them to see how rivals get rated. Ordinary investors read them to learn how a business makes its money before risking savings on it.

No guarantees come with any of it. It's also not a tip, and it can't think for you. A rating captures one opinion on one day, and the next quarterly result can undo the assumptions behind it.

When I read a recommendation now, I treat it as the place where someone else stopped thinking, and I start.

Also Read: What are the different types of Financial Management?

Types of Equity Research: Sell-Side, Buy-Side and Independent

Equity research is usually grouped by who pays for it and who reads it. Money shapes opinion more than anyone likes to admit, so the grouping matters.

Type

Who produces it

Who reads it

Is it public?

Main purpose

Sell-side

Brokerages and investment banks

Institutional clients, sometimes wider investors

Usually shared with clients, sometimes openly

Help clients decide and support trading and banking relationships

Buy-side

Mutual funds, hedge funds, asset managers

The firm's own portfolio managers

No, it stays inside the firm

Decide what the firm itself should own

Independent

Research houses and registered individual analysts

Subscribers and retail investors

Often paid or published openly

Offer a view without trading or banking ties

Buy-side analysts work for the fund and answer one thing: should we own this? Nobody outside sees the work, and performance is what they're judged on.

On the sell-side, it gets complicated. The bank earns commissions from trading and fees from advising the very companies its analysts cover. That's why those reports end with long conflict-of-interest disclosures.

Thematic research follows a trend such as electric vehicles or digital payments across several companies. Useful for seeing where an industry's heading. Only as good as the company-level work under it.

If you take one habit from this section, make it reading the reasoning before the rating. What I can do is sort the equity research companies that career guides and industry sources mention most often.

Brokerages with institutional research desks: Motilal Oswal and Axis Capital turn up regularly in career guides.

Ratings and research houses: CRISIL and Morningstar get listed as employers of analysts.

Global banks with research operations: JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley.

Before you apply, open the firm's current careers page and check its SEBI registration. Share at ₹400, target ₹460: that's 15 per cent. Over a year, is that worth the risk? Better question than whether it's a buy.

Try to say the thesis in two sentences. Can't? Either the report hasn't argued its case, or you haven't followed it. Don't act yet.

Turn to the risks. Hardly anyone does, and it's often the most honest page. Specific risks suggest the analyst did the work. A paragraph of boilerplate suggests otherwise.

Look at how the valuation was done. Discounted cash flow suits steady, predictable cash flows. Multiples suit comparing similar companies. If the method doesn't match the business, be suspicious.

Read the disclosures. Thirty seconds, and you learn who benefits.

Pull up a second report. Doing them well takes judgement.

Understand the industry: its size, its growth, who regulates it, how hard the competition bites.

Understand the company: how it earns, who runs it, who owns it.

Read the financial statements. Each of the three answers a different question. Profit is an opinion, cash is a fact, and the balance sheet shows how much trouble the business can survive.

Analyse ratios over several years and against peers: profitability, leverage, returns on capital.

Forecast, either from the industry down to the company's share of it, or from drivers like customers and prices up to revenue.

Value the company, using discounted cash flow, valuation multiples, sum of the parts, or a mix.

Recommend, and explain why.

Valuation looks like maths until you notice how much of it is a story. Two sensible analysts can build almost the same model and still disagree, because they see the future differently. Building the model takes skill. Choosing the assumptions is where the argument actually lives. Retail investors don't get data terminals or calls with management. They do get the annual report, the management discussion section and a spreadsheet, which is more than people assume.

What Does an Equity Research Analyst Do?

An equity research analyst usually covers five to fifteen companies in one sector. This is the route I'd take.

Get a graduate degree. As I read the SEBI amendment of November 2025, any graduate degree or equivalent qualification plus the relevant NISM certification now meets the educational requirement. Earlier rules asked for something finance-related. The CFA charter and a NISM postgraduate programme are alternatives. Check the current SEBI text before trusting any summary, this one included.

Learn accounting first, because everything else sits on top of financial statements.

Build a three-statement model for a listed company from its annual reports. Tutorials don't count. You only learn modelling by doing it.

Write one sample report on one company, honestly. It shows an employer how you think.

Pass the NISM exam (details below).

Apply for internships and junior roles at brokerages, asset managers and research houses.

Equity Research and the NISM Exam

Anyone preparing or publishing research reports in India needs a valid NISM certification for research analysts. The exam is NISM Series XV: Research Analyst Certification Examination. Here are the numbers.

Detail

What to know

Questions

100

Duration

Two hours

Pass mark

60 per cent

Negative marking

25 per cent of a question's marks for each wrong answer

Certificate validity

Three years

Revised version

Launched by NISM on 20 January 2026

Renewal

Separate exam, Series XV-B, for people whose certificate is still valid

Call it the entry ticket. The 2025 amendment counts the CFA charter as one recognised qualification route next to the NISM certification, and plenty of working analysts don't have it.

You get a structured syllabus in valuation and ethics, and a signal employers recognise.

You pay in years and money.

I'd say it earns its place if you're targeting the buy-side or global roles. A sample report still beats it for showing how you think. Forced to choose for a first interview, I'd walk in with the report.

Equity Research Internship: How to Get One

A lot of equity research jobs start as internships at brokerages, asset management companies or independent research houses. The pay is modest. The real prize is access.

You watch a real model being maintained, and see how a note gets from draft to published.

What gets you noticed is evidence: a clean model, a short note on a company you've followed, a case study on a quarterly result. That counts for more than a stack of course certificates on a CV.

So when you apply, attach the work.

Is It Hard to Get an Equity Research Job?

Yes, entry-level equity research jobs are competitive. Somebody who can build a clean three-statement model and explain their growth rate is rarer than somebody with a certificate.

Which is oddly good news. Practice can get you over this barrier, and that's not true in most competitive fields.

Also Read: What are the main methods of Capital Budgeting?

What to Look For In An Equity Research Analyst Course and Equity Research Course?

Course names in this space are a mess. I'd skip the title and read the syllabus. When I look at a programme, a few things come before the price.

Whether you build a full model from scratch yourself. Watching someone else do it feels productive and mostly isn't.

What you walk away with. A finished report you can send to employers is worth having.

How much accounting gets taught. If it's all valuation, your models will rest on statements you don't fully understand, and those fail quietly.

NISM exam prep.

Who the instructors are, and whether you can check their market or finance background.

Indian companies and Indian disclosures, since that's what you'll be working with.

Then there's the question of what you're really paying for. Updating models and reading filings line by line is how people used to learn the business, and that's the work AI shortens.

So I'd learn the work by hand first and bring the tools in later. Someone who can't check an AI-built model has no business trusting it, and the analysts who do well will be the ones who can tell when a confident-looking output is wrong.

Did You Know?
The US Securities and Exchange Commission notes that a widely shared analyst recommendation can move a company's share price for a time, even when its business outlook has not changed. It's the analysis of listed companies, their industries and their financials to estimate what a share is worth. It usually ends in a report with a buy, hold or sell view and a target price. Useful for judging a stock, but it's an opinion, and nobody should read it as a guarantee.

Do you need a CFA for equity research?

No, you don’t necessarily need it. A CFA charter helps, and under SEBI's 2025 amendment, it counts as one qualification route, but nobody makes you hold it. Most analysts have a graduate degree and the NISM Series XV certification. Interviewers tend to care more about whether you can model and whether you've written a sample report.

Does JP Morgan hire equity research analysts?

Yes, JP Morgan hires for equity research analysts and is regularly listed among employers for analysts, but whether there's an India-based opening depends on when you look. The official careers page is the place to check, and read the role description for location and sector before you apply.

Will equity research be replaced by AI?

It is unlikely that equity research will get replaced by AI. It helps with reading filings and drafting summaries, while the judgement, the assumptions and the accountability stay with the analyst. The early-career work is what changes, so learn modelling by hand and use AI tools to check and extend your work.

Is it hard to get a job in equity research?

Yes, it's competitive to get a job in equity research, and interviews usually test modelling and valuation directly. Demonstrable skill carries more weight than credentials, so a clean model and a sample report can set you apart faster than another certificate.

What skills do I need for equity research?

You need accounting, Excel modelling, valuation and some comfort with data tools for equity research. Writing clearly matters just as much, and so do curiosity about how businesses work and the temperament to change your view when the evidence does.

How do I get into equity research?

To get into equity research, you must get a graduate degree, learn accounting and modelling, write a sample report, pass the NISM Series XV exam and apply for internships at brokerages, asset managers and research houses. Send your work along with the application.

Where Equity Research Meets Real-World Finance

Good equity research keeps asking what the market already believes and which assumption is carrying the most weight. Equity research becomes useful when you question the numbers behind a stock recommendation. Why does an analyst expect earnings to grow? Does the valuation support the target price? What could change the investment case?

Once these questions are answered, you get a clear handle on doing company analysis. A strong understanding of financial statements, forecasting and valuation helps you answer them with more conviction. For aspiring analysts, the next step is to put these skills to work on actual companies and build research reports that explain the reasoning behind a view.

Imarticus Learning's Financial Analysis Prodegree offers a structured route to practise financial modelling, valuation and related analysis through applied projects.
