Group 1 covers Advanced Accounting, Corporate and Other Laws, and Taxation. Group 2 includes Cost and Management Accounting, Auditing and Ethics, and Financial Management and Strategic Management. Each paper carries 100 marks, with 70 marks for descriptive questions and 30 for case-based MCQs.

Candidates need 40% in each paper and 50% aggregate in each group to pass. From Advanced Accounting and Taxation to Auditing and Financial Management, each paper tests a different set of skills. Knowing the subjects is only the starting point. You also need to know which chapters to cover, how the marks are split and which amendments apply to your exam attempt.

This guide breaks down the CA Intermediate syllabus paper by paper. You will find the complete subject list, chapter names, Group 1 and Group 2 details, passing criteria, exam pattern and changes to the syllabus for 2027. It also explains where to get the official ICAI study material so you can prepare from the right source.

As you work through Cost and Management Accounting and Financial Management, you may also find an interest in business costs, budgeting and financial decisions. These areas connect with the work of management accountants. For students who want to build on that interest, the US CMA Course at Imarticus Learning offers a separate route to develop management accounting skills alongside your longer-term career goals.

An Overview Of The CA Intermediate Syllabus

The syllabus of CA Intermediate is the list of subjects, modules and chapters that ICAI can set questions from. It tells you what ICAI has promised not to ask beyond. It doesn’t tell you how deep a question will go inside that boundary, and I suspect that gap matters more than any single chapter.

CA Intermediate Syllabus 2026 at a Glance: 6 Papers, 2 Groups, 600 Marks

Here’s the whole thing in one table. Company accounts take the last five. If I were short on time, I wouldn’t study them in that order. Company accounts let you attempt a full question and know exactly what a right answer looks like. That’s a better place to build early confidence. In the CA Intermediate Advanced Accounting syllabus, that matters.

CA Intermediate Law Syllabus (Paper 2)

Part I is the heavy part. So the Taxation paper in the CA Intermediate syllabus 2027 is the one piece that really moves.

Here’s my thinking, and it’s my thinking, not an ICAI statement. If you sit Taxation in January and miss it, your retake falls under the new Act. A miss then costs you a second round of preparation, not just a second attempt. That’s worth weighing before you decide whether the CA Intermediate new syllabus for 2027 should change your plan. Your options:

Sit both groups in January. Simple, but a Taxation miss means relearning under the new Act.

Group 2 in January, Group 1 in May. Useful if Taxation is your weakest paper. It adds a second set of exam dates.

It won’t suit everyone. It can work for someone who has studied Group 2 once and is coming back to it. It’s a poor way to meet the material for the first time. If I had to squeeze Group 2 into 40 days, I’d split it like this (my split, not ICAI’s):

About 24 days: first pass, roughly two short chapters a day on the light days

10 days: revision

Last 6 days: full papers under exam conditions

Do the same with the Group 1 time, and the CA Intermediate Group 1 syllabus won’t feel like a second exam running in the shadow of the first.

Is the CA Intermediate Syllabus Easy or Hard?

It’s hard in three different ways, and each one needs its own kind of practice. That’s a performance skill, not a knowledge one.

Someone weak at expression who keeps rereading chapters is working hard on the wrong thing. The intermediate CA syllabus doesn’t hide this, because it splits into papers that test each skill fairly cleanly.

I’m not going to quote pass percentages. They move with every attempt, and ICAI publishes them with each result, so look up the last three before deciding how seriously to take the difficulty.
