Some are basic, like Balsamiq for quick wireframes. Figma covers everything from sketches to full design work. UXPin and Framer lean towards code. Newer AI tools like Figma Make, Lovable, Bolt and v0 can turn a typed prompt into working screens. Figma, Penpot, ProtoPie, Justinmind, UXPin and Framer all have free plans. Which prototyping tools suit you depends on how polished the prototype needs to be and what you’re trying to find out. If your idea is hardware, Tinkercad Circuits and Wokwi do the same job for Arduino.

A lot of products fail for a simple reason. A team builts something and minor error is also found out too late. By using a prototype, you’ll get to see in the beginning, instead of a sprint taking a couple of hours instead of a sprint taking weeks.

The prototype might be a drawing on paper, a prototype that is clickable in Figma, or a prototype that an AI could build from one sentence. In this guide I’ll cover all three. You’ll also get 12 prototyping tools I’d shortlist, the free and AI options, and a simple way to use them without getting stuck in settings and plugins. If you’d like to learn this with real projects and mentors, the AI First Product Management prodegree course from Imarticus has a whole module on design thinking and prototyping, and you finish with a product of your own.

What Are Prototyping Tools?

Prototyping tools are apps you use to make an early version of a product that people can actually try. You draw the screens, link them together and hand the thing to a few users. They tell you where they got lost, you fix it, and only then does anyone write the final code.

Think of a checkout button. Would you rather hear it’s confusing from a tester on day one, or from a one-star review after launch? That’s the whole reason these tools exist.

Prototyping meaning

Prototyping simply means making an early, quick, rough version of something so you can test your idea without spending much. The “something” could be:

a single screen or a whole app flow

a page on a website

a physical gadget, like a small sensor kit

even a service, like a new support process

It doesn’t need to work properly. It just needs to feel real enough that someone reacts to it honestly.

What is software prototyping

You build a partial version of a software product, mostly the screens and how a person moves between them. Say a designer links twelve screens so someone can tap through a sign-up. No database sits behind it and no real payment happens. All you want to know is whether the journey makes sense to a real human being.

Prototyping model in software engineering

The prototyping model turns that habit into a way of working. It suits projects where nobody’s quite sure what they want yet, which is more common than anyone admits. People often only know what they want once they see something. In practice it runs as a loop:

Talk to users and stakeholders to get the rough requirements.

Sketch the main screens quickly.

Build a first version, nothing fancy.

Fix it, test it, and keep doing till people are happy.

Only then build the real product, with everything you picked up on the way.

Watch out for scope creep. Once people see a prototype, they start asking for ten extra features.

Why Prototyping Tools Matter

Here’s a quick way to know if your team needs prototyping tools: think about your last release. If it had a feature people ignored, you needed one. A few reasons why they pay off:

Changes cost very little. Moving a button in a prototype takes a minute. After development, it means redoing the design, the code and the testing.

You get better feedback. People share useful opinions when they can click something. Show them a document and they just nod politely.

Everyone sees the same product. Designers, developers and the business team stop imagining three different things.

Approvals go faster. Someone who has tapped through the flow rarely asks for big changes later.

PMs can show instead of explain. You don’t have to wait for a designer to draw what you meant.

Take a loan form with fourteen fields. A prototype test might show that people give up at field nine. You fix that before a single line of code exists. Want a wider view of how product managers work from idea to launch? Our blog on the essentials of product management covers it.

Did you Know?
Adobe XD is now in maintenance mode. It still gets bug fixes and security patches, but no new features. If you’re starting fresh, you’ll probably want to pick something else. The easiest way to sort them is by what you get at the end.

Type

Fidelity

Best for

Examples

Paper and whiteboard

Very low

Early ideas, workshops

Paper, sticky notes, online whiteboards

Wireframing tools

Low

Layout and flow

Balsamiq

Design and prototyping platforms

Medium to high

Clickable screens

Figma, Penpot, Sketch

Interaction and code-based tools

High

Realistic behaviour

ProtoPie, UXPin, Framer, Axure RP

AI prototyping tools

Varies

Fast first versions

Figma Make, Lovable, Bolt, v0

Hardware and circuit tools

Simulated or physical

Arduino and IoT ideas

Tinkercad Circuits, Wokwi, Fritzing

Most teams end up using two or three of these one after another, rough first and polished later. Three types need a bit more explaining.

Paper prototyping: Nobody feels bad about throwing away a paper screen, so people are far more willing to change their minds. That makes it great for early feedback.

Rapid prototyping: Rapid prototyping is the rapid creation of a prototype and testing it out with people before making another. That’s usually a faux clickable that you build in an afternoon in software. In manufacturing it’s typically the 3D printing aspect and that’s what the Rapid Prototyping Journal, which has been published by Emerald since 1995, covers. The two fields look different, but the idea is the same. Build fast, learn something, build again.

Best tools for prototyping with Arduino

If you’re building a physical device, the best tools for prototyping with Arduino are a different crowd:

Tinkercad Circuits is free and runs in the browser. It comes from Autodesk. You drop in an Arduino, wire virtual parts and run your code before touching real hardware.

Wokwi is another browser simulator, better for people who are comfortable with code and use boards like the ESP32.

Fritzing is open source and good for drawing clean breadboard diagrams you can share with others.

My advice is to run it in a simulator first and move to real hardware after that. You’ll save a few components from frying.

Also Read: The Essentials of Product Management

12 Best Prototyping Tools

These are the 12 prototyping tools I’d put on a shortlist, along with what’s not so good about each. I’ve left prices out on purpose because plans change all the time.

1. Figma

It works in the browser, your whole team can edit the same file together, and you can go from a rough wireframe to a clickable prototype without switching apps.

The free Starter plan gives you unlimited drafts but only three design files.

Dev Mode isn’t part of the free plan.

If you only learn one tool from this list, make it this one.

2. Axure RP

Axure is for the times your prototype needs to actually think. You can set conditions, variables and dynamic content, so a form really checks what someone typed.

You gt 30 days free trail limit

It takes time to learn and give you quick results.

3. ProtoPie

ProtoPie is what designers reach for when a swipe, a tilt or a sensor has to feel just right. It can even connect prototypes across a few devices.

There’s a free plan.

For a plain click-through flow, other tools are easier.

4. UXPin

UXPin lets you design with real code components. With its Merge feature you can bring in React components, so what you test behaves like the finished interface.

A free plan with basic features is available, which is fine for learning.

It makes the most sense if your team already keeps a component library.

5. Framer

Framer gives you real web output, and the animation tools are strong. A prototype made there can go live as a website.

The free tier covers one published site on a Framer subdomain.

It’s great for landing pages, less natural for complicated app flows.

6. Justinmind

Justinmind is good for prototypes that use data. With variables, conditions and data lists, you can filter a table or validate a form entry.

It has a free plan.

It’s more than you need for simple click-throughs.

7. Balsamiq

Balsamiq looks hand-drawn, and that’s the point. People stop arguing about colours and fonts and talk about structure instead, which is what you want early on. It plugs into Confluence, Jira and Trello.

There’s a free trial.

Don’t use it when you need polished, high-fidelity screens.

8. Sketch

Sketch is a vector design tool with a huge plugin library, and plenty of designers have used it for years. These days many teams prefer browser-based tools for sharing, so check how your team works together first.

9. Penpot

Penpot is free and open source, and you can host it yourself. That helps if you care where your data sits or your budget is tight.

Its plugin and template library is still growing.

Expect fewer ready-made extras than the bigger names.

10. Miro

Miro began as an online whiteboard. After it acquired Uizard in 2024, it added prototyping, and Miro Prototypes now sits in the Business plan. It’s handy for mapping flows and rough screens, but not for pixel-perfect design.

11. Tinkercad Circuits

If you’re new to Arduino or teaching a class, start here. It’s free, runs in the browser and comes from Autodesk. You can code with blocks or text and test a circuit virtually. One limit is that it doesn’t connect to PCB layout tools.

12. Wokwi

Wokwi suits people who already write code, especially on the ESP32, RP2040 or newer Arduino boards. It simulates your code in the browser and works with PlatformIO and the Arduino IDE. It’s free to start, though private projects need a paid plan.

That’s twelve, but nobody needs twelve. Pick one design tool and one way of sketching roughly, then add something else only when a project needs it.

Best Free Prototyping Tools

Free doesn’t have to mean bad. Now a product manager can type one sentence describing a screen and have something clickable in a few minutes.

There are two to consider if you want to remain in a design tool. Turn prompts, or existing designs in Figma, into working prototypes and web apps with Figma make- the free plan includes some AI credits. Uizard, which Miro now owns, turns text, screenshots or hand-drawn sketches into editable screens.

If you’d rather go straight to code, Lovable builds full web apps from a prompt. Bolt does the same quickly, right in the browser. And v0 by Vercel gives you React components, which fits if you already have a codebase.

There’s one catch. AI prototypes look finished, so stakeholders can start to feel the decisions are already made. It’s still a first draft, so test it with real users and be ready to bin it. Check the free limits too before you build a whole project around one tool, because they run out quickly.

If you’d like to understand what’s behind these tools, Imarticus also runs a generative AI programme for professionals.

Also Read: Common Agile Methodology Mistakes

How to Use Prototyping Tools

How do you use prototyping tools without getting lost in all the features? The good news is that the steps barely change from tool to tool.

Start with one question. Something like “Can a new user find the repayment option in under a minute?” Without a question, the prototype is just decoration.

Sketch on paper first. Five minutes of rough boxes saves an hour of dragging screens around.

Decide how polished it needs to be. Rough is fine for layout questions. If colour, spacing or motion affects the answer, go higher.

Build only the main flow. Three to six screens for one journey is plenty. Settings pages and edge cases can wait.

Link the screens. Connect it to the next screen, and add transitions only where they help.

Test with five real people. Keep your hints to yourself and watch where they pause.

Fix those spots and test again.

Here’s an example. Say you’re testing the checkout in a grocery app and want to know if people notice the delivery slot picker. You sketch four screens on paper, rebuild them in Figma, link them up and put them in front of five people. By the end of the day you know whether the picker needs to move.

Once the design settles, share a link or export specs for the developers. Figma has handoff features for this, though some are on paid plans.

Prototyping Tools for Every Profession

Not everyone needs the same tool. What works for a designer may not work for an engineer, so here is a simple breakdown by role.

Prototyping Tools for Graphic Designers

You already know how to make things look good. Now you just need a tool that turns your screens into something people can click.

Figma is the easiest place to start. You can design and link screens in the same file.

Sketch is a design app many designers already use, with lots of plugins.

Penpot is free, so it is great if you are learning or on a tight budget.

Framer is good when you want your design to become a real website.

Prototyping Tools for Video Editors

You will not build app screens, but you may want to test how something moves. Think of a title animation, a screen transition or an interactive video.

Figma helps you plan graphics and storyboards frame by frame.

ProtoPie lets you try out motion and taps before you build the final version.

Miro is handy for laying out a storyboard with your team.

You will still cut the video in your editing software. These tools just help you decide how it should look and flow first.

Prototyping Tools for Developers

You want something that behaves like the real product and is easy to hand over.

UXPin uses real React components, so what you test is close to what you build.

Figma gives you specs and assets, though Dev Mode is on the paid plans.

v0, Bolt and Lovable turn a simple prompt into working code. It is a fast way to get a first version, and you can edit it after.

Prototyping Tools for Engineers

Most engineers prototype real things, like a circuit or a small device. So the tools are about boards and parts, not screens.

Tinkercad Circuits is free and runs in your browser. You can test an Arduino circuit without any hardware.

Wokwi is better if you like writing code, and it works with boards like the ESP32.

Fritzing is free and good for drawing circuit diagrams you can share.

For mechanical parts, you usually make a CAD model and 3D print it.

Also Read: What Is Agile Scrum?

How to Choose the Right Tool for Prototyping

Most people pick a tool because a friend uses it. They come from how people use it.

Polishing too early. A beautiful prototype makes people shy about criticising it, so keep the first versions rough.

Prototyping everything. They already know how it’s meant to work, so they can’t tell you much.

Treating the prototype as the spec. It shows the experience, but it can’t replace written requirements.

Choosing a tool that’s on its way out. InVision shut down in December 2024, and Adobe XD only gets fixes now. It runs in the browser, suits teams and has a free plan. If you need more advanced behaviour, look at Axure RP, ProtoPie or UXPin.

What are the top 5 UI design tools?

The top 5 UI design tools are Figma, Sketch, Penpot, Framer and UXP they a good shortlist. Pick based on your team size, budget and how much interaction you need.

Which AI tool is best for prototyping?

If your team already uses Figma, try Figma Make. Lovable and Bolt are good for working web app prototypes, and v0 is good for React components.

What are the types of prototyping?

By how polished they are, prototypes are low fidelity (paper sketches, wireframes) or high fidelity (finished-looking and interactive). In software engineering you’ll also hear about throwaway or rapid, evolutionary, incremental and extreme prototyping.

How to use prototyping tools?

Decide what you want to test, sketch on paper, build just the main flow, link the screens, test with real users and fix what they struggle with. Imarticus teaches this step by step in its product management programme.

Why is prototyping used?

Prototyping helps you spot usability problems and wrong guesses early, when they’re cheap to fix. It also gives users and stakeholders something real to react to.

What are some free prototyping tools?

The free prototyping tools are Figma Starter, Penpot, and the free plans of ProtoPie, Justinmind, UXPin and Framer are good places to start. For Arduino ideas, Tinkercad Circuits and Wokwi are free.

Test the Idea Before It Costs You a Sprint

Earlier I said most teams build something nobody needed and only find out later. Prototyping tools are a cheaper way to find out, and the habit matters more than the brand. Sketch on paper, move to one design tool, use AI when you need speed, and always put it in front of real people before you build.

The tools will keep changing. Some get bought, some shut down, and new ones show up every few months. What stays useful is knowing what to test and how to read what people tell you. If you’d like to practise that on a real product with mentors beside you, the AI First Product Management prodegree course from Imarticus ends with a product you build and pitch at Demo Day.

Compare the best prototyping tools, free options, AI tools and features for your next project.

[1807

post-278594","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-management

<meta name="description" content="Explore the best prototyping tools for UI design and product development.
