Companies need to manage profits, handle risks, and plan while making the best use of their resources. That’s why an investment banking and capital markets course can help you get started.

In this article, I explain the scope, objectives and functions of financial management using practical examples, because once you understand what these decisions look like in everyday business situations, the textbook definitions become much easier to remember.

Remember, it is not just about maintaining records or tracking expenses – it’s about making the right decisions at the right time so the business can grow and stay on track.

What is the scope of Financial Management?

The scope of financial management covers all major activities involved in planning, obtaining, investing, using and controlling a business’s financial resources. It includes financial planning, investment decisions, capital budgeting, financing decisions, capital structure, working capital, dividend decisions, risk management and financial control.

When I explain the scope of financial management, I usually think of it as everything a business needs to decide, manage and control when it comes to its money. It goes much further than maintaining accounts.

I find it easiest to think of scope as the areas that financial management deals with. For example, if a company wants to expand, financial management helps determine how much money is required, where that money should come from, whether the investment is worthwhile and how it should affect the company’s finances. In simple terms, the scope of financial management covers where a business gets its money from, where it puts that money, how it manages it and how it measures the results.

Suppose I run a business and have ₹1 crore available. I need to decide where to invest it, whether I need additional finance, how much cash to keep available for daily operations, how much profit to distribute and how much to reinvest. I also need to keep an eye on risks and check whether the financial decisions I made are actually producing the expected results.

That gives us the major areas covered by financial management.

Financial Concept

What This Means

Real-World Scenario

Impact

1. Profit Maximisation

A business ultimately needs to earn more than it spends. Profit maximisation therefore remains an important objective of financial management. But I would not look at profit in isolation. If one investment gives me a large profit this year but exposes the business to enormous risk, while another gives me a more stable return over several years, simply choosing the first option because its immediate profit is higher may not be the best financial decision.

2. Wealth Maximisation

Wealth maximisation means increasing the overall value of the business over the long term. When you make a financial decision, looking at the profit you will earn is not enough. You also need to look at the risk involved and when you will actually receive the money. For example, if one investment gives you ₹10 lakh today and another gives you the same ₹10 lakh after five years, they are not really equal. The first investment option (₹10 lakh today) is more valuable because you have the money earlier and you can use or invest it elsewhere. Always prioritise making decisions that will build the value of the business over time, rather than chasing quick profits.

3. Maintaining Adequate Liquidity

In business, profit is not the same as cash. You might have made a profit of ₹20 lakh, but that does not necessarily mean ₹20 lakh is sitting in your bank account. For example, if your customers have not yet paid you and you have ₹8 lakh of supplier payments due tomorrow, you still need to find the cash to make those payments. This is why a business needs to maintain enough liquidity. You need to have sufficient cash available for regular expenses such as salaries, rent, supplier payments and bills. A business can survive a temporary drop in profit, but running out of cash can create an immediate problem.

4. Efficient Utilisation of Funds

You cannot treat business money as if there is an unlimited supply of it. Every rupee you have should ideally have a purpose. If too much money is sitting unused, you are missing an opportunity to use it somewhere productive. At the same time, putting money into projects or expenses that do not give you a reasonable return can also hurt the business. Observe where the money is going and ask whether it is actually helping the business earn more, operate better or grow.

5. Maintaining Financial Stability

Businesses SHOULD be careful about how they finance themselves. Taking a loan can be useful when you want to expand, buy machinery or invest in the business, but taking on too much debt can become a problem when the interest and repayments start putting pressure on cash flow. At the other extreme, being too cautious with finance can also hold the business back. So, you need to find a practical balance between debt, owner’s funds, cash and other sources of finance. The goal is to keep the business strong enough to handle its regular expenses, deal with difficult periods and still have the financial capacity to grow.

6. Managing Financial Risk

Every financial decision carries some uncertainty. The objective is not to eliminate all risk — that is unrealistic — but to identify important risks and manage them appropriately.

7. Supporting Long-Term Growth

Good financial management should give a business enough financial strength to invest in expansion, technology, new products and other future opportunities.

I would summarise the objectives as:

Earn profits → use funds efficiently → maintain liquidity → manage risk → create long-term value.

Profit Maximisation vs Wealth Maximisation

Basis

Profit Maximisation

Wealth Maximisation

Focus

Profit earned

Long-term value

Time perspective

Often short term

Long term

Risk

May receive less emphasis

Explicitly considers risk

Cash-flow timing

Limited emphasis

Important

Overall approach

Narrower

More comprehensive

In simple terms, profit tells me how much the business earned; wealth maximisation asks what those earnings and financial decisions are doing to the business’s long-term value.

What is the primary objective of financial management?

The primary objective of modern financial management is generally considered to be the maximisation of the long-term value or wealth of the business for its owners/shareholders, while maintaining an appropriate balance between profitability, liquidity and risk.

This is broader than simply maximising accounting profit.

For example, if I can choose between an investment that produces a very high short-term profit but carries excessive risk and another that produces sustainable returns over several years, looking only at this year’s profit may lead to the wrong decision.

That is why wealth maximisation is generally considered more comprehensive than short-term profit maximisation.

Also Read: What is strategic management?

What is the difference between scope, functions and objectives of financial management?

The simplest distinction between scope, functions and objectives of financial management is:

Scope = areas covered. Functions = activities performed. Objectives = results to be achieved.

For example, investment is part of the scope of financial management. Evaluating investment opportunities and deciding where to allocate funds are functions. Traditionally, the main job was to arrange funds, manage them properly and keep track of the business’s financial position. So, the focus was usually on questions like how much money the business needed, where to raise it from and how profits should be distributed. Finance was important, but it was mostly seen as something that supported the other areas of the business. Today, things are much more connected. Financial management is involved in deciding what the business should invest in, how it should use its money and whether a decision is financially worth taking.

For example, if a company wants to launch a new product, finance does more than just arrange the required funds. It looks at the expected cost, future cash flows, possible risks and the return the company can realistically expect. In simple terms, finance has moved from just managing money to helping the business decide what to do with that money.

Traditional scope of Financial Management

Modern scope of
Financial Management

Raising finance

Raising and optimising finance

Managing funds

Allocating and managing capital efficiently

Profit focus

Profitability + long-term value

Financial records

Financial analysis and decision-making

Limited risk consideration

Active risk management

Short-term financial needs

Short-term liquidity + long-term strategy

Fact!
Around 868,600 financial managers were employed in 2024, and this is projected to reach ~997,400 by 2034 (net gain ~129k jobs), according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

What is Financial Management?

Financial management is the process of planning, organising, and managing financial resources to achieve business goals. It includes decisions related to investment, financing, and profit allocation to ensure long-term growth and stability.

Today, financial management is no longer just about maintaining records – it’s a strategic function that drives growth and competitiveness. In simple terms, it’s about making sure money is used in the smartest possible way.

Whether it’s a startup managing limited funds or a large corporation handling massive capital, financial management plays a central role in every decision. It helps businesses avoid unnecessary risks, optimise profits, and stay financially healthy.

In simple terms, financial management is about planning, raising, investing and controlling money in a way that helps a business remain profitable, financially stable and capable of growing. Its scope covers areas such as investment decisions, financing, capital structure, working capital, dividend decisions, financial planning, risk management and financial control.

Importance of Financial Management

Financial management is important because it supports long-term growth and stability while improving profitability. Here are a few reasons why financial management is essential for every business:

Helps in better decision-making.

Ensures efficient use of resources.

Maintains financial stability.

Supports long-term growth.

Reduces financial risks.

Without proper financial management, even profitable businesses can fail.

Fact!

The last decade has seen about 74,600 openings per year on average, including new roles and replacements.

Financial Management Salary Trends in India (2026)

One of the biggest reasons people choose financial management is the earning potential. And money is at the centre of every business decision. Whether a company is launching a new product, entering a new market, or just handling its daily operations, everything depends on how well its finances are managed. That’s exactly where financial management comes in.

To do well in financial management, you need more than just theoretical knowledge. Some key skills include:

Understanding financial data

Analysing trends and risks

Budgeting and forecasting

Making decisions under uncertainty

Working with tools like Excel or Power BI

The stronger your analytical thinking, the faster your career grows.

Role of a Financial Manager

A financial manager plays a critical role in shaping a company’s financial future.
