I get ready to start my day in the dynamic and exciting world of Big Data Analytics. I work as a Hadoop Developer at a top telecom firm. My job role is synonymous to software developer or application developer and refers to the same role but in the Big Data domain.
9:00 AM
A typical day begins with me brushing up on key happenings in the world of Hadoop, which is a fast-changing world. A Hadoop developer needs to have basic understanding of Java and an in-depth knowledge of the Hadoop framework which includes HDFS, MapReduce at the very least and Pig, Hive, Sqoop, Flume etc as add-ons.
10:30 AM
I have organized a group meeting to discuss data preparation and different analysis that needs to be performed. As a Hadoop developer, our work begins when I receive structured data from the RDBMS or unstructured data through Flume.
11:30 AM
We then try to clean the data using the Hadoop ecosystem. Hadoop is the “glue” that puts together a number of computers, and makes them work together into a Hadoop cluster. You write a task in Java or another language, and Hadoop distributes the task to every computer in your cluster. Now you can store and process practically unlimited amounts of data.

I break for lunch with my team colleagues. We chat about team activities, industry and company updates as well as current affairs.

A very important and underrated skill required to actually be a Hadoop developer is domain knowledge, which will obviously differ for different companies. A telecom company will need its Hadoop developers to know telecom-related fundamentals to actually solve business problems. Writing mapreduce jobs or pig scripts or hive queries is easy once you are familiar with the basics of the Hadoop ecosystem. But mapping a business problem to a mapreduce problem is challenging. I head into a meeting with the project manager who interacts with clients, to better understand the requirements of the job ahead.
1:30 PM
Post the meeting, I now know that we need to find customers at risk from call data records. To do this, one first needs to understand the nature of call data records and understand what parameters define the customers at risk. In other words, you should first be able to solve a business problem manually on a small dataset and then use Hadoop to implement the same logic in hadoop/mapreduce etc. I then load the customer profiles data, call information, billing information etc. into HDFS using Sqoop and Flume.
2:30 PM
Once I have the input to output transformation requirement crystal clear in my head, Iwrite code using higher level languages like Pig or Hive for processing, which are more than adequate to meet most of my requirements. It is only in very rare cases that I need to write code in Java.

We have a quick coffee break.
4:00 PM
I perform data validation on the data ingested using mapreduce by building a custom model to filter all the invalid data and cleanse the data.
5:00 PM
I then generate reports to help with data visualisation.
6:00 PM
We discuss the progress made as a team and plan for the next day. One of my colleagues suggests that we can streamline our work by developing workflow in Oozie to automate the tasks of loading the data into HDFS and pre-processing with Pig. None of us really knows Oozie but we are all eager to learn!

My manager drops me home after a long fulfilling day as a Hadoop developer.
